Bowra, C. M.

Bowra, C. M. (Sir Cecil Maurice Bowra) bouˈrə [key], 1898–1971, English classical scholar, b. China. Associated with the Univ. of Oxford throughout his adult life, he was warden of Wadham College (1922–71) and also served as professor of poetry (1946–51) and vice chancellor (1951–54). He was knighted in 1951. Although he wrote and edited books in many areas of literature, Bowra is particularly known for his studies of ancient Greek poetry and culture.
