Lowestoft

Lowestoft (lō'stôft, –stuf) [key], city (1991 pop. 55,231), Suffolk, the easternmost city in England. It is a popular seaside resort and has fishing, shipbuilding, food processing, and other light industries. The resort area is separated from Old Lowestoft by Lake Lothing and the harbor. Oliver Cromwell took the old town in 1643, and in 1665 the coastal waters were the scene of a naval victory of the English under the duke of York (later James II) over the Dutch. Most of the old houses were destroyed by a fire in the 17th cent. St. Margaret's Church, from the 15th cent., has an ancient tower. Fine bone china was produced in Lowestoft from about 1750 to 1800. Lowestoft was the birthplace of the satirist Thomas Nashe.
