Evansville

Evansville, city (1990 pop. 126,272), seat of Vanderburgh co., extreme SW Ind., a port on the Ohio River; inc. 1819. It is a rail and river shipping and commercial center for a coal, oil, and farm region. Machinery, plastics, primary metals, pharmaceuticals, food products, and fabricated-metal items are among its many manufactures. The Univ. of Evansville and the Univ. of Southern Indiana are there. The city has a museum of arts and sciences, a zoo, a symphony orchestra, and an aviary. A nearby Native American mound site is a state memorial.
