Chilpancingo

Chilpancingo (chēl"pänsēng'gō) [key]or Chilpancingo de los Bravos (chēl"pänsēng'gō &thstrok;ā lōs brä'vōs) [key], city (1990 pop. 97,165), capital of Guerrero state, S Mexico. Chilpancingo serves as the regional center of agricultural industry, producing primarily corn and bananas. Its full name, Chilpancingo de los Bravos, is in honor of its heroes in the war against Spain—three brothers, of whom Nicolás Bravo was most prominent. During the war, the Congress of Chilpancingo, convened in 1813 by Morelos y Pavón, briefly established a constitutional republic based on the reforms of Hidalgo y Costilla.
