Campina Grande

Campina Grande (kumpē'nä grän'di) [key], city (1991 pop. 326,307), Paraíba state, NE Brazil, on the Borborema plateau. It is an important commercial and financial center and a shipping point for products from the Brazilian interior (hides and skins, cotton, and agave). Campina Grande manufactures metal products, plastics, pharmaceuticals, leather, and textiles. Other industries in the city are linked to agriculture and cattle raising; beans, cassava, sisal, and cotton are the chief agricultural products. The city was founded in the late 17th cent. and developed rapidly as an important point on the route from the coast to the interior.
