Tarpaulins
or Tars. Sailors, more frequently called Jack Tars. Tarpaulins are tarred cloths used commonly on board ship to keep
articles from the sea-spray, etc.
The more correct spelling is tar-palling, from pall, Latin pallium, a cloak or cloth.
