Stoics

Founder of the Stoic school. Zeno of Athens. These philosophers were so called because Zeno used to give his lectures in the Stoa Paecilé of Athens. (Greek, stoa, a porch.)

Epictetus was the founder of the New Stoic school.

The ancient Stoics in their porch
With flerce dispute maintained their church,
Beat out their brains in fight and study
To prove that virtue is a body,
That bonum is an animal,
Made good with stout polemic bawl.

Butler: Hudibras, ii. 2.
