Smithfield
The smooth field (Anglo-Saxon, smethe, smooth), called
in Latin Campus Planus, and described by Fitz-Stephen in the
twelfth century as a “plain field where every Friday there is a
celebrated rendezvous of fine horses brought thither to be sold.”
