Sandals of Theramenes
(4 syl.), which would fit any foot. Theramenes, one of the
Athenian oligarchy, was nicknamed “the trimmer” (cothurnus, a
sandal or boot which might be worn on either foot), because no
dependence could be placed on him. He blew hot and cold with the same
breath. The proverb is applied to a trimmer.
