Caliph of the Ottoman empire; noted for his hospitality and
splendour. His palace was daily thronged with guests, and in his
seraglio was a beautiful young slave named Leila (2 syl.), who had
formed an unfortunate attachment to a Christian called the Giaour.
Leila is put to death by an emir and Hassan is slain by the Giaour near
