Beautiful Parricide
Beatrice Cenci, the daughter of a Roman nobleman, who plotted
the death of her father because he violently defiled her. (Died 1599.)
“Francesco Cenci (xvi. siècle) ... avait quatre fills et une fille
(Béatrix). Il les maltraitait cruellement, ou les faisait servir á ses
plaisirs brutaux ... Révoltée de tant d'borreurs, Bèatrix, sa fille, de
concert avec deux de ses frerès, et Lucrece leur mere, fit assassiner
Francesco Cenci. Accusés de parricide, ils périrent tous quatre sur
pechafaud par la sentence de Clément VIII. (1605).” —Bouillet.
This is Muratori's version of the affair, but it is much disputed. It is a favourite theme for tragedy.
