Howdah

A canopy, or seat fixed on the back of an elephant.

“Leading the array, three stately elephants marched, bearing the Woons in gilded howdahs under gold umbrellas.” —J. W. Palmer: Up and Down the Irrawaddi, chap. xx. p. 169.
