(Anglo-Saxon, heort-ford, the hart's ford). The arms
of the city are “a hart couchant in water.”
Hertford,
invoked by Thomson in his Spring, was Frances Thynne, who
married Algernon Seymour, Earl of Hertford, afterwards Duke of
Somerset.
