Dickens is a perverted oath corrupted from “Nick.” Mrs. Page says -

“I cannot tell what the dickens his name is.” -

Shakespeare: Merry Wives of Windsor, iii. 2.

The three poets who express a conflagration are “Dickens! How-itt, Burns!”
