Bickerstaff
(Isaac). A name assumed by Dean Swift in a satirical
pamphlet against Partridge, the almanack-maker. This produced a paper war so diverting that Steele
issued the Tatler under the editorial name of “Isaac Bickerstaff, Esq., Astrologer” (1709).
