Alligator Pears
(the fruit of Persea gratissima) is a curious
corruption. The aboriginal Carib word for the tree is “aouacate,” which
the Spanish discoverers pronounced “avocado,” and English sailors
called “alligator,” as the nearest approach which occurred to them.
