Brewer's: Weeds

Widow's weeds. (Anglo-Saxon, waed, a garment.) There are the compounds waed-bréc (breeches or garment for the breech), waedless (naked or without clothing), and so on. Spenser speaks of “A goodly lady clad in hunter's weed.”
