Delano, Amasa

Delano, Amasa ămˈəsə dĕlˈənō [key], 1763–1823, American sea captain, b. Duxbury, Mass. At 15, he served as a soldier in the American Revolution and later as a privateersman. His experiences on the sea in the days of New England's supremacy, including the slave rebellion aboard a slave ship commanded by Benito Cerreño (later used as the basis of a novella by Herman Melville), are recorded in his Narrative of Voyages and Travels in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, Comprising Three Voyages Round the World (1817).
