It is a popular year-round resort with both winter and summer sports. It was founded as a ski resort in 1936 by W. Averell Harriman, then board chairman of the Union Pacific RR; the railroad purchased the land and built the resort to attract more passenger traffic to the West. In 1964 it was sold to a land-development corporation; in 1967, Bill Janss, a former Olympic skier, became sole owner.
