EncyclopediaAnchisesAnchises (ănkī'sēz) [key], in Greek mythology, member of the ruling family of Troy; father of Aeneas by Aphrodite. When Anchises boasted of the goddess's love, Zeus crippled or, in some versions of the legend, blinded him. When Troy fell, Aeneas rescued his father in a scene often depicted by later painters, including Bernini. In some legends, Anchises and his wife later founded Venice or Padua.
