George Cadbury Biography

George Cadbury

manufacturer, social reformer
Born: 9/19/1839
Birthplace: Birmingham, England

With his brother Richard, he took over his father's failing chocolate business and built it into the highly successful Cadbury Brothers. As a Quaker, Cadbury was concerned with the living and working conditions of his employees, and long before social welfare was fashionable, introduced a private form of social security. He designed a village called Bournville in which factory workers would live. The designs were noted for their inclusion of gardens, and were immediately popular, open to both Cadbury employees and non-employees alike.
