One of Italy's most endeared comic actors, Roberto Benigni, tackles a most unpalatable subject, the Holocaust, and courageously treats it with wit. Guido (Benigni), a waiter in Fascist Italy, woos a wealthy beauty (Braschi) away from her fiancé, who's more economically suitable. Jump ahead five years and they're married with a son. Guido uses fibs and tall tales to shelter his son from the vile anti-Semitism and in doing so, stands up to the forces bent on demoralizing him.
