Leon Edel biographer, educator Born: 9/9/1907 Birthplace: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
A professor of English and American literature at New York University from 1966 to 1972, he won the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award in 1963 for the second and third volumes of his five-volume biography of American novelist and critic Henry James. He also published editions of James's letters and other writings. Died: 9/5/1997
