The top pop recording artist of the 1970s, he first achieved success with the song “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” which was featured on his 1969 debut album and later became a big hit for the folk group Peter, Paul, and Mary. His other hit songs include “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” “Sunshine On My Shoulders,” “Annie's Song,” and “Rocky Mountain High.” In 1977 he moved into film, starring opposite George Burns in Oh, God! He died in a plane crash.
