Handsome albeit sometimes wooden leading man who often portrays unstable or otherwise undesirable characters, with headline-grabbing roles in Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977), An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), and Mr. Jones (1993). A converted Buddhist and the former husband of supermodel Cindy Crawford, Gere's biggest hit was Pretty Woman (1990) with Julia Roberts and the two rejoined for 1999's Runaway Bride.
