Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and actor known for his dramas that combine myth and reality, past and present. His plays include Buried Child (1978) and A Life of the Mind (1985). His films include (as an actor) Days of Heaven (1978), Resurrection (1980), Raggedy Man (1981), Frances (1982), The Right Stuff (1983), Paris, Texas (1984), Country (1984), The Pelican Brief (1993) and Black Hawk Down (2001); and made for television, Dash and Lilly (1999), One Kill (2000) and After the Harvest (2001).
