Government

Guyana has a unicameral National Assembly, whose 65 members are elected for five-year terms. The president, who is the chief of state, is popularly elected for a five-year term. The president appoints a cabinet and prime minister. Guyana's politics largely reflect its ethnic differences. The leading parties are the socialist People's National Congress (PNC), the Marxist-oriented People's Progressive party (PPP), the conservative United Force party (TUF), and the Alliance for Change (AFC). Administratively, the country is divided into ten regions. Guyana is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
