It is a republic with a unicameral assembly (Kuvendi) with 140 members, 100 of them elected by direct popular vote and 40 by proportional vote, for four-year terms. The assembly elects the president for a five-year term, and the president appoints a prime minister. The executive branch is completed by a council of ministers, which is proposed by the prime minister, nominated by the president, and approved by parliament. Albania is divided into 12 counties.
