Trás-os-Montes

Trás-os-Montes (trä'zoozhmôn"tesh) [key], former province of NE Portugal, comprising the districts of Bragança and Vila Real. The capital was Bragança. It is now included with other territory in Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro prov. (4,162 sq mi/10,780 sq km). The terrain is rough and the winters cold except along the Douro River in the hilly vineyard district, which yields the famed port wine grapes, and in warm tributary valleys, where olives and other crops are grown. Mining is an important industry in the mountains.
