Tiruchirapalli

Tiruchirapalli (tir"oochirupŭl'lē) [key]or Trichinopoly (trichino'pulē) [key], city (1991 pop. 711,862), Tamil Nadu state, SE India, on the Kaveri River. It is a district administrative center and an important educational, religious, and commercial city, with locomotive construction workshops and heavy electrical industries. Tobacco and cotton are marketed. The city's chief landmark is the shrine of Srirangam, an elaborately carved monument to the Hindu god Shiva, at the base of a 270-ft (82-m) rock. Another temple stands at the top of the rock.
