EncyclopediaReggio nell' EmiliaReggio nell' Emilia (red'jō nel"āmē'lyä) [key], city (1991 pop. 132,030), capital of Reggio nell' Emilia prov., in Emilia-Romagna, N central Italy, on the Aemilian Way. It is an agricultural and major industrial center and a rail junction. Manufactures include food products, metals, machinery, and electrical equipment. Founded by Rome in the 2d cent. B.C., it later became a free commune and in 1289 came under the Este family. Points of interest include the 13th-century cathedral, the Renaissance Church of the Madonna della Ghiara, and the Parmeggiani art gallery. The poet Ariosto was born in Reggio in 1474.
