Porto Torres (pôr'tō tôr'res) [key], town, NW Sardinia, Italy, at the mouth of the Mannu River. The port for nearby Sassari, it is a commercial, fishing, and ferry service center. It was a Phoenician, Carthaginian, and then Roman port. Its church of San Gavino is one of Sardinia's most famous.
