Paphos

Paphos (pā'fos) [key], two ancient cities, SW Cyprus, on the coast. Old Paphos was probably founded in the Mycenaean period by colonists from Greece or Phoenicia. Modern excavations have revealed ruins dating from 3000 B.C. New Paphos was 10 mi (16 km) to the northwest. An important seaport, it was the capital of Cyprus from the middle of the Hellenistic period until the time of Constantine.
