Murrumbidgee mərəmbĭjˈē [key], river, c.1,050 mi (1,690 km) long, rising in the Australian Alps, SE New South Wales, Australia, and flowing generally W to the Murray River on the Victoria border. Used extensively for irrigation, the river—Australia's third longest—receives water from the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme.
