Leeuwarden

Leeuwarden (lā'vär"dun) [key], Frisian Ljouwert, city (1994 est. pop. 87,500), capital of Friesland prov., N Netherlands. It is the center of an agricultural and dairying region and has a noted cattle market. Manufactures include food products, clothing, artificial silk, and tin. Chartered in 1435, Leeuwarden was (16th–18th cent.) the center of a goldworking and silverworking industry. Many structures date from the 16th and 17th cent., notably the huge brick Oldehove Tower. The large Frisian Museum is there.
