Jyväskylä

Jyväskylä (yü'văskü"lă) [key], city (1998 pop. 76,948), Western Finland prov., S central Finland. Situated on Lake Päijänne, it is an important port. Paper and wood products, metals, wool, and foodstuffs are produced. There is an arts festival held in July. The city was chartered in 1837 and was the site (1858) of the first Finnish-language secondary school. A university, designed by architect Alvar Aalto, was established in 1966.
