A great iron- and steel-producing center, it is sometimes called the “Pittsburgh of India.” Other manufactures include automobiles, agricultural equipment, and locomotive parts. Built in the early 20th cent., it was named for Jamshedji Tata, founder of the Tata Iron and Steel Works. Nearby are extensive coal and iron deposits.
