It is a commercial and industrial center, and it is the headquarters of Olivetti, an important Italian company. Manufactures include typewriters, computers, and textiles. A Roman town (Eporedia), it was later the capital of a Lombard duchy and then the seat of a marquisate. Berengar II, one of its rulers, was briefly king of Italy (mid-10th cent.).
