Dundalk

Dundalk (dundôk') [key], town (1991 pop. 30,061), seat of Co. Louth, NE Republic of Ireland, near the mouth of the Castletown River at Dundalk Bay. It has a port that exports livestock, barley, and other crops. Industries include tobacco, clothing, shoe, and computer factories, distilleries and breweries, flour and linen mills, fishing. Dundalk is also a railroad center with facilities for the manufacture and maintenance of railroad equipment. The town was often besieged because of its location at a natural pass into N Ireland.
