Antibes

Antibes (äNtēb') [key], resort town (1990 pop. 70,688), in Alpes-Maritimes dept., SE France, on the Riviera. It is a seaport and the center of a great flower-growing region; a school of horticulture is there. Nearby is the fashionable resort Cap d'Antibes. The town was founded as a Greek colony in the 4th cent. B.C. A fortified port, it still has the 16th-century Fort Carré. Also of interest is a Grimaldi château (14th and 16th cent.) housing a museum that includes numerous works of Picasso. Roman ruins are to the south.
