It is a seaport and the center of a great flower-growing region; a school of horticulture is there. Nearby is the fashionable resort Cap d'Antibes. The town was founded as a Greek colony in the 4th cent. B.C. A fortified port, it still has the 16th-century Fort Carré. Also of interest is a Grimaldi château (14th and 16th cent.) housing a museum that includes numerous works of Picasso. Roman ruins are to the south. The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th ed.
