Redding

Redding, city (1990 pop. 66,462), seat of Shasta co., N central Calif., on the Sacramento River; inc. 1872. A principal tourist center for a mountain and lake region, it also has lumbering, food-processing, and diverse manufacturing. Redding is one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities. Simpson Univ. is there. Attractions include the Turtle Bay art and history museum, the Sundial Bridge, and an arboretum. Nearby are Shasta Dam, Lake Shasta Caverns, Lassen Volcanic National Park, Lava Beds National Monument (see National Parks and Monuments, table), Whiskeytown Lake, and McArthur–Burney Falls Memorial State Park.
