Port Lavaca

Port Lavaca (luvăk'u) [key], city (1990 pop. 10,886), seat of Calhoun co., S Tex., on Lavaca Bay; inc. 1907. A deepwater port of entry, it is a shipping point for an agricultural (corn, rice, cattle, cotton) area. There are shrimp, crayfish, crab, and fishing industries, as well as related processing. Tourism is significant, and nearby gas and oil wells add to the economy. Concrete, machinery, and chemicals are manufactured in the city.
