EncyclopediaMuskingumMuskingum (musking'gum) [key], river, 111 mi (179 km) long, formed in NE Ohio, at Coshocton, by the union of the Walhonding and Tuscarawas rivers and flowing S through Zanesville, then SE to the Ohio River at Marietta. The Muskingum River system has extensive flood control projects. The canalized lower river is navigable. The upper river was a link in the Ohio and Erie Canal.
