Catherine Beecher Writer and educator Born: 1800
Beecher was a pioneer in health and physical education for American girls and women. She developed a widely used system of calisthenics that was designed to make women's bodies stronger and healthier. Beecher also spoke out against the wearing of corsets, which she believed were hazardous to internal organs, and wrote extensively about the benefits of good nutrition Died: 1878
