Hinault, Bernard

Hinault, Bernard (bernär' ēnō') [key], 1954–, French cyclist, b. Yffignac. Turning professional in 1977, he had more than 200 race victories and is best known as the third in his sport to win the Tour de France five times (1978–79, 1981–82, 1985). A skilled time trial sprinter and a powerful climber, he was world champion in 1980 and won the Vuelta a España (1978, 1983) and the Giro d'Italia (1980, 1982, 1985). After retiring, he served (1986–94) as technical adviser to the Tour de France.
