Squarcione, Francesco

Squarcione, Francesco (fränchā'skō skwärchō'nā) [key], 1397–1468, Italian painter; teacher of Mantegna. According to tradition he was a tailor and embroiderer who turned to painting c.1429 and established a school of painting in Padua. Only two signed works of his exist, Madonna with Child (Berlin) and an altarpiece in five sections (Padua).
