Sophia

Sophia (sōfī'u, Ger. zōfē'ä) [key], 16301714, electress of Hanover, consort of Elector Ernest Augustus. She was the daughter of Frederick the Winter King and Elizabeth of Bohemia, who was the daughter of James I of England. In 1701, Parliament settled on her and her issue the succession to the English throne (see Settlement, Act of), and in 1714 her son, George I, became king of England. Sophia was noted for her wide intellectual interests.
