EncyclopediaSophiaSophia (sōfī'u, Ger. zōfē'ä) [key], 1630–1714, electress of Hanover, consort of Elector Ernest Augustus. She was the daughter of Frederick the Winter King and Elizabeth of Bohemia, who was the daughter of James I of England. In 1701, Parliament settled on her and her issue the succession to the English throne (see Settlement, Act of), and in 1714 her son, George I, became king of England.
