Salviati, Francesco de' Rossi (fränchās'kō dā rôs'sē sälvēä'tē) [key], 1510–63, Italian painter. Salviati studied with Andrea Del Sarto and was greatly influenced by Parmigianino and Michelangelo. His elegant portraits (e.g., Portrait of a Gentleman, c.1541; Metropolitan Mus.) were popular, and his reputation spread to France where he was employed by Francis I. Salviati's works, such as his decorations for the Palazzo Farnese in Rome, were characteristic of the mannerist style in their extreme complexity, display of chiaroscuro technique, elongated figures, and spatial and pictorial ambivalence (see mannerism).
