St. John, John Pierce

St. John, John Pierce, 18331916, American political reformer, b. Brookville, Ind. He traveled in the West and in South America, fought in the Union army in the Civil War, and after 1869 practiced law in Kansas. As governor of Kansas (1879–83) he successfully supported a prohibition amendment to the state constitution. In 1884 he was the Prohibition party candidate for President. He later joined the free-silver movement and championed woman suffrage.
