Raoul

Raoul (räOOl') [key], d. 936, duke of Burgundy, king of France (923–36). Elected king to succeed his father-in-law, Robert I, Raoul fought the Normans and the Hungarians, who repeatedly invaded France. He also defended his crown against those nobles who supported the claims of the deposed Carolingian king, Charles III. The royal authority, lessened in part by objections to Raoul's taking the throne, remained weak under his Carolingian successor, Louis IV.
